Baby Nursery Ideas
Theme
How do you design a nursery?
Some people will tell you to pick your theme first. But sometimes it takes looking at ideas for awhile before you settle on a theme. I recommend heading over to Pinterest and simply typing in baby nursery ideas. Start pinning any that grab your eye. After you’ve got a good amount of pins, I’d say 20-30 at least take a look and see if anything stands out.
This could be a certain nursery design that you just fell in love with. Or you might start to notice a theme of what you pinned. Maybe it was farmhouse, or beachy or floral? Maybe you like clean lines or you might love shabby chic! I like to do this exercise over and over again when picking things individual items like cribs, rugs, curtains etc. You can even setup sections under your main nursery board for these items to narrow in on the one you love!
If designing a nursery really just isn’t your thing then keep reading to find my recommendations for the best Interior Designers in Miami who can create something amazing!
Timeline
When should you start planning nursery?
I was planning the nursery as soon as the stick said I was pregnant! I would say by the time you are halfway through your pregnancy, 18-20 weeks you should have a theme picked out. This will give you time to start ordering things like furniture that might be on backorder or need to be custom made.
Painting and adding things like wallpaper are best done in that second trimester when you are feeling pretty good! Our daughter Grace was due in late March and I took a weekend in January to get her room painted and ready. Good thing too because she ended up coming 4 weeks early!
Once you’ve taken care of the big things like paint and furniture you can start adding in the smaller décor and storage items. Etsy can be a great place to get artwork but make sure to do it early so it arrives on time. I recommend aiming to be done before 36 weeks. Just in case your little decides to join the party early like mine did!
Cost
How much does it cost to set up a baby nursery?
Let’s be honest you can spend as much as you want or as little as you want. This article talks about New York parents spending up to 100K on luxury nurseries! What is more important is setting a budget! If you are buying second hand and DIYing most things you can get away under $2000 with no problem. If your style trends more to high end and you’ll be buying everything new and custom you are looking at over $10,000 most likely. This is where interior designers in Miami are a great help. They can take that budget you’ve set and help you prioritize where to spend it.
Furniture is going to be your biggest cost typically. Then I recommend picking at least 1 other item to splurge on. You could opt for a simple white crib but then splurge on gorgeous wall paper for the crib wall behind it. Don’t forget to budget for wall décor items. Nothing makes a room feel more cozy than having a few things displayed on the walls. Whether it’s shelves for storage or that perfect large piece of art that just finishes the room!
Interior Design in Miami
When I think about interior design in Miami I think of clean and modern but also beachy and tropical. Crisp whites paired with warm wood tones and bright pops of color. I’m a total Golden Girls fan so the iconic palm tree print you could find all over Blanche’s house always come to mind and of course anything wicker or rattan.
I recently photographed a nursery that definitely had that vibe! White walls, a natural wood crib, neutral furniture and the crib accent wall stole the show with bright, vibrant, modern wall paper. I think you can easily take a beachy tropical theme and apply that to a nursery design. I’m imagining blues and greens as accent colors. Plus a large print of ocean waves framed in a crisp white frame. Add in a weathered driftwood toned crib and a seashell mobile and your all set!
