Your camera roll is about to explode! No seriously! I looked at the amount of photos I took in the years before my kids and then after and it was insane. I went back and looked to give you exact numbers:
- 2011 – 386 photos (no kids just dogs and I apparently didn’t love them enough to take lots of photos🐕)
- 2012 – 799 (my oldest was born in Oct and 300 of those photos were from Oct-Dec 😂)
- 2013 – 1248 (I tripled the amount of photos 🤯)
- 2014 – 2871 (we added in kid #2 so now I had twice the subjects to capture!)
Now guess how many of those photos got printed……maybe 3 if I’m being generous. But you know what did get printed? Our professional newborn photos! Guess what we have a beautiful album of, gallery wraps on the wall and framed portraits from? You guessed it our professional photos!
So what is my why to display newborn portraits in your home? I once read an article that quoted Jaclyn Gulotta, Ph.D., a licensed mental health counselor saying “When children grow up seeing photos of themselves proudly displayed around their home, it says to them, ‘I am a valuable and important member of my family. I matter.’” That really stuck out to me as a new mom and especially as a photographer.
So today I want to talk about some of My 6 Favorite Ways to Display Newborn Portraits in Your Home.
Table of Contents
Albums & Print Boxes
Albums:
There’s something so timeless about a newborn baby album. Imagine sitting down with your little one in a few years, flipping through pages filled with their first moments—those tiny fingers and toes, those sleepy eyes, and maybe a few snuggles with mom and dad.
My 3 kids like to sit down and look at their albums together and compare how they looked as babies. This is really important because our younger son was born with a cleft lip and having a beautiful album celebrating him even when he was born different has helped him see himself in a positive manner. Albums are a perfect way to tell the full story of your baby’s early days, all in one beautiful, handcrafted book.
- Tip: Choose an album that reflects your family’s style. A soft linen cover can feel cozy and classic, while a leather-bound album adds a touch of elegance. Leave it out on your coffee table or bookshelf as a way to display newborn portraits in your home, ready for those sweet moments of reminiscing.
Print Boxes:
If you like to switch things up or have more flexibility in how you display your portraits, a print box might be perfect for you. This little treasure holds a collection of matted or loose prints that you can pull out whenever you want, making it easy to swap out which ones you display or even gift a few to family members.
We get one of these for every session we do! It makes it so easy to grab a photo for school projects or just swap out our smaller frames around the house. Plus the linen boxes are so beautiful to just have on display stacked up on our bookcases!
- Tip: Display a few favorite newborn prints on a shelf or your mantle, and change them out as your baby grows. It’s like giving your home a little refresh with each new milestone!
Framed Single Prints & Gallery Walls:
Framed Single Prints:
One of the most breathtaking ways to display your newborn photos is with a large framed print. Picture this: your baby’s sweet face framed beautifully, taking center stage in your living room or nursery. Every time you pass by, you’ll be reminded of those first snuggles and the love you felt when they arrived.
- Tip: A classic black-and-white portrait can be timeless, while a colorful print adds a pop of personality to the room. Try hanging it above the crib or changing table for an extra special touch in the nursery.
Gallery Walls:
Can’t choose just one favorite? A gallery wall is the perfect solution! You can mix different sizes of framed photos, showcasing not just your baby’s adorable face, but also those little details like their tiny toes, their first yawns, and maybe even a family portrait. It’s a beautiful way to tell the story of your baby’s first days in a way that’s unique to your family.
We have a staircase gallery wall that includes a mix of photos from all of our newborn sessions plus we have added family sessions. We are at a point where the newborn photos are dwindling but I will always have at least 1-2 from each of their sessions in the mix.
- Tip: Add a personal touch by mixing in other keepsakes—maybe a framed birth announcement or a sweet quote that resonates with your family. Over time, your gallery wall can grow with your baby, creating a visual timeline of your family’s journey.
You can see how our gallery has grown from the first display I did till now.
Canvas Prints & Other Unique Displays:
Canvas Prints:
If you’re looking for a soft, frameless way to display your newborn portraits, canvas prints are a great option. There’s something about the texture and simplicity of a canvas that brings a sense of warmth and artfulness to a room. Plus, they look so cozy hanging in a nursery or family room. We had canvas prints from our boys sessions hanging over our bed at one point!
- Tip: Consider a large canvas print as a focal point in the nursery or in a cozy reading nook. It’ll add an extra dose of love to the space where you spend so many quiet moments with your baby.
Cards & Other Creative Ideas:
Don’t forget to share the joy! Newborn portraits make the sweetest cards, whether you’re sending out birth announcements or a little thank-you note for the baby gifts you’ve received. You can even get creative with other ways to showcase your baby’s photos—we turned each of our kids birth announcements into an ornament for the tree. This started out because our first was born in Oct so it was perfect timing when I sent them out. It gave all of our family members a way to showoff his baby photos!
- Tip: Personalized thank-you cards with your baby’s portrait are a wonderful way to spread the love and keep friends and family connected to your little one’s journey.
My Favorite Ways to Display Newborn Portraits in Your Home
No matter how you choose to display your newborn portraits in your home know that you are helping your child see they are loved and celebrated by their family. We have moved twice recently and in both houses my kids were bugging me to get their photos back up on the walls. I even hung a favorite photo of my daughter right at her eye level and it was the first photo she ran to!
As for the million cell phone photos get a digital frame where you can display them too! We got frames for all the grandparents and now can just drop new photos whenever we take them. My father in law ALWAYS notices new photos on the frame and loves it! I also add our professional photos here too so we can see all of them vs just my favs.
If you’re ready to turn your newborn portraits into timeless displays that you’ll treasure for years to come, reach out today! I’d love to help you create something truly special for your home.
