Why Motherhood Photography is So Important

a family of four together wearing blues

Hey there! Let’s talk about something we all know is true—as moms, we’re the family historians, right? Continuously capturing everyone else’s precious moments while rarely stepping in front of the lens themselves. Think about it for a second: how many photos do you have stored on your phone right now? And how many actually include YOU with your children? If you’re like most moms I work with in Charlottesville and throughout Virginia, that number is probably much smaller than it should be. Today, I’m making the case for why professional motherhood photography isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity and a gift to your entire family.

The Missing Piece in Family Photo Albums

I’ll be super honest with you about something personal. My own mom wasn’t happy with her weight when I was growing up, so she stayed out of most family photos. I can count on one hand the truly memorable photos I have with her—one Easter picture where she was newly pregnant with my sister, and those stiff annual church directory portraits. That’s pretty much it.

This was Easter 1985, when I was 5.

Now, even though I’m not always thrilled with my weight either (who among us is, right?), I know deep down how important it is for me to be in photos with my kids. They don’t see what I see in the mirror. They just see their mom—the center of their world. They WANT pictures with me. I’ve had to do a lot of mental work to get past my own insecurities and recognize that my children love me exactly as I am.

And you know what? Even if I look at a photo and cringe a little at first, when I come back to it a year or two later, I absolutely treasure that image—and I’m so glad I didn’t hide from the camera.

Why Professional Motherhood Photography Makes All the Difference

Those quick selfies grabbed between errands or the occasional photo a well-meaning husband snaps don’t capture the real magic of your relationship with your children. Here’s why professional motherhood photography creates something truly irreplaceable:

Authentic Connection Over Posed Perfection

My approach to motherhood photography isn’t about stiff poses or forcing smiles. It’s about capturing genuine interactions between you and your children. When you work with me, I create a relaxed environment where real moments naturally unfold. No props or crazy poses—just authentic connection.

Two side-by-side images of moms with their children—one showing a mom surrounded by her three children, all smiling together, and the other capturing a mom with her two daughters, sharing a joyful moment as they gather close around her.

The Beauty of Being Present

Want to know my secret for getting the most beautiful mother-child images? It’s super simple: just focus on your kids. That’s the biggest thing I tell families at photo sessions. Put the phones away (yes, really!). The only thing we’re there to do is play with the kids and love on them. That’s literally all they want—your undivided attention.

A photo session creates this magical bubble where you can just be present with your children. I love watching kids snuggle with mom and dad, play together, and really focus on each other. Those genuine interactions create the happy family photos you’ll treasure forever.

Documentation of Fleeting Stages

I don’t think I need to remind you, but I will anyway—that brand new teeny tiny baby will be walking in about a year. The toddler who reaches for your hand at every chance? Soon they’ll be reaching for the car keys instead. The preteen who still wants bedtime snuggles? Well, teenagers have their own ideas about personal space!

Professional motherhood photos capture these fleeting relationships at each precious stage. They freeze time in a way nothing else can, preserving not just how you looked, but how you loved.

Types of Motherhood Sessions to Consider

There are so many beautiful ways to document your relationship with your children beyond standard family portraits:

Lifestyle “Mommy and Me” Sessions

These relaxed, in-home sessions capture you and your children in your natural environment, doing what you love together—whether that’s making pancakes on Saturday mornings, reading favorite bedtime stories, or simply cuddling on the couch. These sessions tell the authentic story of your relationship.

Milestone Motherhood Sessions

From maternity photos that capture the anticipation before your baby arrives to newborn sessions showcasing those first precious weeks, milestone sessions document the evolution of your motherhood journey. Many of my clients book combination packages to document both their pregnancy and their newborn’s arrival—an investment they never regret.

Overcoming the Hesitation: Why Moms Avoid the Camera (And Why They Shouldn’t)

Let’s be real for a minute. The most common hesitation I hear from moms is exactly what I struggle with myself. Many of us aren’t thrilled with how we look. We’ve had babies, our bodies have changed, and some days we barely recognize ourselves in the mirror.

Here’s what I tell hesitant moms (and myself!): even if you’re not a fan of these photos right now, I PROMISE you will be in years to come. You’re going to wish you had more pictures of yourself with your babies. Trust me on this one.

The way you view yourself is NOT the way your children see you. You need to be kinder to yourself, mama! I heard something once that really stuck with me: when you look in the mirror and think those harsh thoughts, imagine saying those exact words to the 5-year-old version of yourself. You would NEVER speak that way to your childhood self, so why do you say it to your current self?

Don’t miss the chance to document these fleeting years because you’re waiting to lose those last 10 pounds or for your hair to grow out. These photos aren’t about how you look—they’re about the love story between you and your children.

Making the Most of Your Motherhood Photo Session

As an experienced photographer who specializes in capturing authentic family moments, here are my top tips for a successful motherhood session:

Choose Comfort Over Trendy

Wear something that makes you feel good—comfort shows in your smile! When you feel confident in your outfit choice, that ease translates into natural, beautiful photos. My client dashboard provides helpful guidance on what to wear for your session.

Schedule Smart

Plan around your children’s best times of day. Hungry or tired kiddos make for challenging sessions! As a mom of three myself, I know exactly how to work efficiently to capture beautiful images before little ones reach their limits. My family sessions are designed to be just 45 minutes—short enough that dad doesn’t get bored but long enough to capture genuine moments.

Trust Your Photographer

As an award-winning photographer with 14+ years of experience, I know all the tricks for flattering angles and beautiful lighting. Whether we’re working in your home or at an outdoor location, I’ll guide you through the process with a relaxed, professional approach that puts everyone at ease.

Plan Your Display

Before your session, think about where you’ll display these precious images in your home. Will you create a gallery wall in your living room? A beautiful album for your coffee table? Thinking about the final product helps you envision the value these photos will bring to your family for years to come.

Creating a Visual Legacy Through Motherhood Photography

These photographs aren’t just for your Instagram feed today. They’re creating a visual legacy for your family for generations to come. Your children don’t see the flaws you obsess over; they just see their mom—the center of their world, the keeper of their hearts, the kisser of boo-boos and maker of memories.

I’ve photographed countless mothers with their children over the years, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a mom transform from camera-shy to completely confident when she sees how beautiful her connection with her children truly is. All that uncertainty melts away when they realize they’re creating treasures their family will cherish forever.

The perfect time for motherhood photos isn’t when you’ve lost weight, changed your hairstyle, or bought a new wardrobe. The perfect time is RIGHT NOW, while your children are exactly the age they are today—because they’ll never be this age again.

Taking the Next Step

As a mom of three and a Virginia native who understands the value of preserving these fleeting family moments, I would be honored to help you create beautiful motherhood photographs that tell your unique story. I limit my bookings to just 2-4 sessions per month to ensure each family receives the personalized attention they deserve.
