As we loaded up the car I just kept telling myself if he is still there it is meant to be and if he isn’t then it’s not. It had been about 15 min since I had called the animal shelter after seeing their Facebook post about a German Shepard mix up for adoption. They said they had someone else already on the way in and it was first come first serve. So I kept telling myself if he isn’t there then he just wasn’t meant to be for us yet. I’m not even sure why I got so attached the moment I saw his photo, I had just told David the week before I kind of liked only having one dog to worry about. But Sam needed a buddy, he’s had a hard year with losing Sadie and then his eyesight. He was lonely and needed someone to pull him out of his funk.
We pulled up to the shelter parking lot and I saw someone in the lobby already and I thought well that is it, he must be taken already. I went in anyway to ask and they said no he was still available! I was so excited I had to restrain myself from running back out to call David and the boys to come in, instead I walked calmly over and waved them in. We met Blitz for the first time in one of the small rooms and he was EXCITED!!! He immediately started licking the boys faces but settled down after a few minutes. We had brought Sam to meet him to make sure they could at least stand each other. So we all trooped out to the outdoor yard and I brought Sam over to check Blitz out. After a minute or so Sam started jumping around in a play position that I haven’t seen him do in months!
So we signed the papers, loaded everybody up and headed home! Now I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you it’s not all been sunshine and roses here. We have some potty training issues but with a lot of praise and frequent trips outside we are making small progress. Sam and Blitz are figuring out who is top dog so there have been a few fights but last night Blitz came over and laid right up against Sam in the kitchen and there was no growling or anything. This morning I separated them for this photo shoot and neither one liked it. They certainly aren’t best friends yet but I think we will get there!
So I’d like to officially introduce you to the newest member of our family Blitz a 9 month old German Shepard and we think whippet mix. He had a tall skinny body like a greyhound or whippet with the coloring and ears I think of a shepard. He reminds me of a baby giraffe with long skinny legs that sometimes get away from him, lol! It took awhile but turns out he will sit perfectly for treats which I should have known!
