As an artist I have worked very hard to find my style, everyone has a style but sometimes it takes awhile to recoginize it. The style I love for my photographs is for them to look crisp, clean and modern. It is a style I use throughout my life including how I dress and how I decorate. Every once in a while though I like to step outside my style and try something different and fun! Such was the case a couple weeks ago when I spotted this really cool vintage firetruck parked at the race track! I already knew I wanted to pull the color and texture out on it in a photograph, I wanted it to be very edgy and bold which is different then my normal style. I really lucked out on the next part though because I was able to grab my sister in law and her boyfriend for a 5 min photoshoot as it started drizzling. They were the perfect subjects because their style is edgy and bold and I knew it would work for the look I was going for! Sometimes things just fall into place and they were thrilled to oblige me! We literally spent 5 min on this shoot as the rain started to pick up and I didn’t want to get my camera too soaked. Thank you to my little brother for being my assistant and holding my lenses under his shirt to keep them dry!

I think most girls have a routine whenever we have a big party coming up! We spend weeks trying on dresses to find the perfect one and then it is on to search for shoes and the cutest purse we can find. We also book appts to get our nails done and of course our hair. I like to stop off at the MAC makeup counter and have my makeup done professionally. After I’ve spent all the time and effort on everything else it seems wrong to just go with my normal makeup routine. It is fun to have someone who knows what they are doing spice up my look for the night!
So how does this relate to photography? Well I don’t think preparing for a party is that much different from preparing for your photo shoot. Oh and a party only lasts one night whereas you will be looking at your photographs for years to come! I’ve already shared my outfit idea board for my photoshoot and after a trip to the nail place I’m sporting a sweet French mani/pedi combo. So I wanted to share some tips on makeup with you that not everyone may know. I’m not giving actual advice on putting on makeup because let’s face it I’m still figuring that out myself! I’m giving you tips on having your make up professionally done without breaking the bank.
I stopped off at the new Sephora store in Spotsylvania Towne Centre to find out the scoop on their policies for makeup consultations! They offer full consultations and express services that I did not know about. A full consult requires the purchase of a $50 giftcard and an appt be set ahead of time. I look at the purchase requirement as a non issue because if you are like me and are going to be spending money on skin care and makeup anyway then you are really out anything. Instead you are getting a bonus of having your make up done! I tend to purchase products they use on me because I love how I look when they’re done but it is pretty easy to keep that giftcard and when you need mascara or eyeliner then you are all set. What is really great is that if you aren’t interested in a full consult or don’t want to spend the $50 they offer free express services! Ever wanted to try out a smoky eye look or need help with finding the perfect lipstick they can help you for free!!!! So if you are pretty adept with makeup but want your eyes to pop more in your photos I think it is awesome that you can stop by Sephora and they can help you out. It is a great way to put that extra polish on your makeup for your photos.
I heard a great tip at the Fredericksburg Bridal Show for brides that are having professional makeup is to schedule your makeup trial to coincide with a bridal session or engagement photo session. It gives you a chance to see how your makeup will look in photos before the wedding day!
I hope this helped and I plan to stop by Sephora before my photo shoot!

So I think making this an every other week column works best for me and since I’ve been pretty good at that schedule so far I’m going to stick with it!
Love It!
1. 3G Networks! Okay so I had no idea how spoiled we are being in the Northern Virginia area and having almost constant access to AT&T’s 3G network. David and I both have iphones and surfing the web is usually pretty quick. I’m not talking desktop cable modem fast but pretty good considering I can get to most internet sites on something that is the size of my hand. I’m impressed by this! Last week we traveled to Emerald Isle, NC for a week of beach, sun and fun on our vacation. The only unfun part was that we were on an ……E network. I had no idea how spoiled we were until we found ourselves giving up on searching for anything on our phones unless we could connect to a nearby wi-fi network. I have no idea how I would survive in an E only area it is like going from having indoor plumbing to running out to the outhouse at 2am to use the bathroom. How do people in E areas survive?!?!? Ok that may be a little melodramatic but it was a pain in the you know what! Thank goodness for Wi-Fi and that leads to my second love this week!
2. Unsecured WiFi! So I picked the one beach house without wireless internet….oops. Hey on the list of wants for a beach house I had two- must allow pets and must be beachfront! I accomplished those two so I was thrilled. Anyway here is the wonderful thing about beach communities they pack the houses really tight together and they don’t secure their wifi!!! Yes!!!! So we had our choice of several networks to connect our phones and laptops to and bask in the speed of someone else’s internet access. About the only thing we found we could not do was stream a movie from netflix on the computer, our wireless signal was not quite up to the task. All in all though thank you to every beach house owner who does not secure your wireless internet, I’m a big fan of yours!
3. Wonderful friends, family and clients! With David leaving my friends, family and even my awesome clients have been soo sweet and supportive of me. The kind words on my blog and on facebook mean so much to me. Thank you for being so awesome! I know you guys will help keep me busy and distracted so the next 7 months fly by!
I must be having a bad week because I have several Hate It’s to choose from this week.
Hate It!
1. Delivery Companies- Part 1! So I am having a bad week regarding packages apparently and Fedex and USPS are on my hit list. USPS claims my label somehow separated from a box I shipped and now I have to fill out paperwork for them to find the box. It was a 20lb box with the label secured by 4 pieces of tape not sure how they just lose each other. Now I have a very lovely buyer that I’m probably going to have to refund this week and wait for USPS to locate my box if that ever happens.
2. Delivery Companies- Part 2! Fedex why do you make me feel like a horrible person for not knowing who my neighbors are? I’m not completely awful; I’ve met them all but I’m terrible with names. My two babies (camera body and 50mm lens) were shipped back to me from Canon after repairs and imagine my shock after waiting all day with the door wide open was I to find someone else signed for them!!!! Even worse was that I had no idea who signed for them and there was no note in their system that B. Spode was at XX address. I’ve gone back and forth between feeling ashamed at having no idea who B. Spode was and being ticked off that they could have given the tools to my livelihood to someone who might not like me. (Impossible I know
So as I’m riding with David to the airport and freaking out at who has my camera I remembered how to access my countys real estate system that lists all the people who live on my street. Thank you 3G and iphone for being able to do this while in the car! I was able to look at the names and find out which neighbor it was and when I got home they had left the packages on my doorstep. Thank you to good neighbors even if I don’t know your last name! Fedex I ask that next time you put a note in the delivery report that the package was left at an alternate address so I at least know which house to send the thank you note to!
3. Goodbyes! They suck. If you follow my blog or know me personally then you know my husband David is a Marine and is headed to Afghanistan for the next 7 months. He spent most of the summer in California but we were able to see each other every couple weeks so that made it easier. We spent the last week at Emerald Isle and it was nice to just be together making dinner again or just watching the waves crash on the beach. I was glad that we weren’t trying to cram tons of things into the week it was more just about being together and doing whatever. I was pretty good on the crying part and held out till the last night and I thank my husband for holding me while I cried and going and finding me tissues when the snot started running everywhere. The next 7 months are going to be hard but thanks to number 3 on my Love It list I know I will be okay! Today I am one day closer to him coming home and that is my attitude going forward.

Last week I packed up the girls and the truck and headed off to the airport to pick up David for our last week together before he deploys. We headed down to Emerald Isle and stayed right on the ocean which was awesome! (Sidenote: If anyone is getting married in Emerald Isle and needs a photographer I would be happy to travel back there to shoot your wedding!) I loved just sitting on the back deck watching the waves crash. Of course I had to sleep with the window cracked so I could hear the ocean every night. Maybe I should get one of those sleep machines with ocean sounds! We spent the week playing with the puppies and relaxing, I was able to hold off my tears until the last night too so yay for me.
After I shot April and Ryan’s engagment session before our vacation I told my husband how they had taught Atty how to high five and it became his mission to teach Sadie and Maxie the same thing! They picked it up pretty quick especially when their reward was their favorite treats from Petsmart. They are called Pet Botanics Training Reward but we just refer to them as doggy crack. Our pups go seriously crazy as soon as we break these out. Sadie our yellow lab usually tries to perform all her tricks at once which is pretty funny to watch her lay down and roll over all while speaking. I’m not sure how she will get the high five in there now. Maxie will now knock Sadie out of the way and high five David so she can get a treat. I took a couple quick shots of their impressive skillz!

Wednesday we got up before dawn and went deep sea fishing on a very big boat that had one of those fighting chairs. There were 4 of us on the trip so we took turns reeling in from the fighting chair. The fish weren’t really hungry the day we were out there but luckily we all got at least one turn in the chair! David reeled in a Barracuda fish and I was lucky enough for it to be my turn when it came time to reel in the biggest fish of the day. It was a giant Wahoo and David videoed all my moaning and groaning through the whole 5 min 45 sec of reeling. I thought for sure I would have to tap out and have someone take over after about 2 min when my arm was burning!!!! I made it the whole way though and everyone said I deserved to catch the biggest one since I was the only one hung over the boat tossing my cookies that day. Yeah so I guess I can add sea sickness to the list of things that make me puke. Not fun. So here is David watching the sunrise and trying to ignore me and then there is me with my Wahoo!!

Here are a few more of the fish me caught and more posing with my Wahoo!

I know this is out of order but here are two shots off the boat of the sun rising. I love the low hanging clouds and the water splashing up to meet them!

Aw, Melissa, I’m so glad you all had this time together! The pictures are beautiful, as always, and your dogs are so cute! Tell David that when he gets home, he needs to teach them the double high-five! =)August 9, 2010 – 8:30 pm
